About Guardian Breathers
Guardian Breathers was started in 1994 after seeing the need for a more effective, user-friendly, simple to operate desiccant breather. The manufacture of the breathers are for high voltage transformers (and related breathers), industrial gearbox, hydraulic systems, storage tanks, on-road tankers and pump tankers.
Although the Guardian Breather offer some protection against dust and airborne contaminants, with the internal filtration system, the primary function of a breather is to control moisture contamination within your equipment, whether utilized in the power generator (coal, nuclear, wind or sun generation), mining, materials storage and handling as-well-as industrial equipment.
We are 100% South African manufactured product, utilizing locally sourced suppliers for components that are not manufactured in house, or sourced abroad to our strict specifications and imported directly to our warehouse. Our products are easy to maintain, with some not requiring any tools, what-so-ever, for installation.
We are proud that our products meet local and international requirements which are trusted components within our field. We supply within South Africa, Sub Saharan Africa and further abroad.
Silica gel forms the main component of our entire range. It comes in the form of either, silica gel crystals or silica gel beads. This is been sold by our newly formed company BluGem
Guardian Breathers holds a B-BBEE Level 2 – which holds 125% procurement recognition – this is a South African requirement. We are also registered on the Central Suppliers Database and have other certified vendor numbers.
The company is currently managed by the two directors, Clyde Davids (Operations) and Janine Erdmann (Administration). Dedicated staff manage the in house manufacture of the breathers and dispatch.

About Our Products
Although we have many variants in our product mix, let’s start off with our biggest range, our transformer breathers.
Transformer Breathers
Our transformer breather range caters from the smallest transformer all the way to the massive machines, in excess of 132,000 Litres. Our products are available to fit most transformers, due to the various configurations that are available.
SMALL Transformer Breathers (Up to 11,700 litres)
This range of breathers comprises 7 size variants (TX 1 to TX 7), with the aim of ease of maintenance being the top priority (known as Type ‘A’ Configuration). The Quick Disconnect (QD) top allows for a tool free refill principal.
Once the breather is correctly installed, changing the used Silica Gel, as-and-when necessary, is as simple as remove the oil bowl, twist off the bottom canister section, discard the used Silica Gel, twist on the canister section with the new Silica Gel to lock position, place new oil in the oil bowl to the level marked and return onto the breather. Job Done!
There are a lot more interesting standard features built into this breather range, which you can read about.
LARGE Transformer Breathers (14,860 to in excess of 131,790 litres)
This range of breathers comprises 29 size and shape variants (TX 22 to TX 26/3), with the aim of versatility, no matter how limited or excessive the space on your machine.
The Large to Small breather combination (known as Type ‘D’ Configuration), is as simplistic as following the steps as described in the SMALL Transformer Breather section, above (assuming that the operator/technician has not allowed the Silica Gel to deteriorate too far).
Once the breather is correctly installed, changing the used Silica Gel, as-and-when necessary, is as simple as remove the oil bowl, twist off the canister section, discard the used Silica Gel, twist on the canister section with the new Silica Gel to lock position, place new oil in the oil bowl to the level marked and return onto the breather. Job Done!
